Lauded for her "brilliant voice," soprano Monica Niemi has performed operatic, concert, and musical theatre repertoire across the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America. In 2024, Monica sang the role of Lady Macbeth in Verdi's Macbeth with Shakespeare Opera Theatre. She was seen as Anna Milder in the award-winning, world premiere production of Beethoven's Wrong Note: A Steampunk Opera. Monica was a semi-finalist in the 2024 MIOpera International Vocal Competition and the Georgia Symphony Orchestra Beethoven 9 Vocal Competition.
In 2023, Monica was a soloist on Marshall Opera’s inaugural, Oral History Project concert in New York City, performing an excerpt from Louis Karchin’s opera Jane Eyre. Monica covered the role of Magda (The Consul) with Angels Vocal Art in Los Angeles and was a semi-finalist in the Premiere Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition.
In 2021 and 2022, Monica made role debuts of Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) and Brünnhilde (Die Walküre) in New York City. In 2019, Monica made her Carnegie Hall debut, singing selections from Aida and Madama Butterfly.
Other recent performances include the role of Mrs. Gobineau in The Medium at the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice, Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) with Mosaic Arts, and the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos with dell’Arte Opera Ensemble.
In concert, Monica has performed the solo works of Rossini, Eben, Handel, Mozart, Roman, Zemlinksky, and Mendelssohn. Monica made her Merkin Hall debut in 2015, performing lieder of Viktor Ullmann and Erich Korngold as part of the concert series The Ullmann Project.
Monica’s musical theatre credits include multiple roles with the Missoula Children’s Theatre National Tour, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street, and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum.
Monica received her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University. She lives in New York and studies with internationally-renowned mezzo-soprano, Victoria Livengood.
